Art

At Elmgrove Primary school we believe that Art and Design is a visual language which all children have the right to learn. We intend to build an Art and Design curriculum which gives pupils an opportunity to develop and extend their skills, deepen their knowledge and understanding. It also provides pupils an opportunity to express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas.

At Elmgrove Primary school, with the help of an art education consultant we have implemented clear and progressive units of work which are in line with the National Curriculum and delivered with a clear structure. Within each key stage, the following key topics are covered; drawing, painting, collage, printing and 3D work to ensure that the pupils are exposed to different art forms. These key topics are then covered again in the next phase which ensures revision and spaced repetition. Pupils at Elmgrove have a wide exposure to different artists (international/national/ local/from an ethnic minority/ artist with disabilities) which will help to widen and deepen their knowledge of Art and Design. Through projects such as ‘Think Like an Artist’ pupils are encouraged to work independently using their own life experiences to create a final product, which allows the children to have ownership over their curriculum and lead their own learning in Art and Design. There are also opportunities for pupils to work collaboratively such as when making 3D human figures from junk modelling materials.

The impact of the Art and Design curriculum at Elmgrove is to ensure that we nurture creativity and imagination whilst enabling pupils to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. Through an inspiring and engaging curriculum, the children will remember more and understand more about Art and Design.

Design and Technology

At Elmgrove Primary school we intend to build a Design and Technology curriculum which gives pupils the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and a deeper understanding of designing and making functional products.

At Elmgrove, with the help of the D & T association we have implemented clear and progressive units of work which are in line with the National Curriculum. Within each key stage, different units of work are covered to ensure full coverage of the topics and to build on prior knowledge. Each unit of work follows a clear design process; research, design, make and evaluate. There are opportunities for the pupils to work independently, this may be through problem solving which allows the pupils to have ownership over their curriculum and lead their own learning. There also opportunities for collaborative work, learning to support and help one another.

The impact of the Design and Technology curriculum at Elmgrove is to ensure that we nurture creativity and innovation through design, and by exploring the world, in which we all live, work and play. Pupils will have a clear enjoyment and confidence in the subject which will apply to other areas of the curriculum. Through an inspiring and engaging curriculum, the pupils will remember more and understand more.

French

The intention of our French curriculum is that all pupils develop key language learning skills set out by the national curriculum and to inspire a love of languages and learning about other cultures.

Within all KS2 classes we have implemented a high-quality French language curriculum which progressively develops pupils’ skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) through regularly taught and well-planned weekly lessons. Children will gradually acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics.

Learning an additional language will offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, others and cultural differences. It is hoped that children will foster a love of language and a desire to further learning beyond the classroom and in their future.

Music

At Elmgrove our intent is to encourage children on their musical journey by inspiring creativity and self-expression.  Our aim is to spark a lifelong love of music by exposing our children to diverse musical experiences. This is implemented in many different ways such as children listening and responding to different musical styles, using voices and instruments as a means of expressing themselves, having many different opportunities to perform in school and much more. This, along with a range of music lessons we offer as well as extracurricular activities has positively impacted our curriculum as it has enabled our children to become confident musicians, with a growing passion for music and the art of performing.

Computing

At Elmgrove our intent is to offer our children access to a computing curriculum which develops their knowledge and empowers them to be active, independent, confident and responsible participants in an ever-changing digital world. We are committed to equip all our pupils with the computing tools they need to develop capabilities in finding, selecting and utilising information, to understand how to use technology safely and responsibly for communication, to use hardware and software creatively and effectively, to apply technical skills and knowledge to their learning in other subject areas.

Science

At Elmgrove, we intend to prepare our children for their future with a “hands –on”, inquiry-based science curriculum that enables them to confidently explore and discover the world around them. We will motivate and actively engage our children, to nurture and grow their curiosity. Core scientific knowledge and skills are taught through direct teaching, experimentation and exploration. Our intent is for all our children to be life-long learners who are: inquisitive, independent thinkers, confident to ask ‘Big Questions’ and who are well-prepared for their future in the ever-changing world.

Geography

At Elmgrove our intent, when teaching geography, is to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and people within it. We aim to promote the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people. We explore the world’s resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. We implement geography through a variety of lessons that cover both the geographical skills and curriculum content over the children’s time at Elmgrove. Learning questions are used to inspire curiosity and encourage children to think deeply about the concepts explored. The impact of our geography curriculum is that children are progressing in their geographical skills and knowledge and look forward to their geography lessons.

History

Our intent is that through finding out about how and why the world, our country, culture and local community have developed over time, our children at Elmgrove will understand how the past influences the present. History enables children to develop a context for their growing sense of identity and a chronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people. We implement history through enquiry-based learning, encouraging children to make connections and ask questions of the past. Artefacts and primary and secondary sources are a key part of our history learning at Elmgrove to enable children to become historians and deepen their historical understanding. The impact of our teaching in history is that our children are developing their curiosity about the past and talking about their learning confidently and with enthusiasm.

RE

At Elmgrove we are proud to celebrate the diversity of religion within our community. The implementation of Religious Education ensures that our children develop an understanding and appreciation for the expression of beliefs, cultural practices and influence of principle religions and world views in the local, national and wider global community. The impact of RE at Elmgrove plays a significant role in the development of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development while intending to promote pupil’s open-mindedness and development of their sense of self.

PSHE

PSHE is at the core of what we do at Elmgrove and enables our children to become kind, respectful, committed and responsible members of society, as well as developing intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually. With an ever-changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community.
